History of wine
Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni Caprai is the result of a long research and experimentation process that Arnaldo Caprai started in 1988 in collaboration with the Milan University and expresses the highest result ever achieved by any Sagrantino grapes.
Just the best grapes, harvested by hand from the vineyards that benefit the best soil and climate condition are taken to produce this unique wine: especially the plants
have a multiplicity of clones able to give the wine great complexity and structure.
Sagrantino 25 Anni is vinified according to the best winemaking techniques to preserve and enhance the features , then is aged in wood for about 24 months in small barrels that magnify the potential of the grapes.
Produced only in top vintages and in a varying quantities according to the vintage (but never exceeding the 15,000 bottles per year) Sagrantino 25 Anni takes its name from being in the market in 1996 - for its first vintage 1993 – to celebrate the 25th anniversary from the foundation of the winery (1971).
Since its debut in the market, Sagrantino 25 Anni gets from the most important Italian wine Guide - Guida Vini d’Italia Gambero Rosso Slow Food - the 3 bicchieri award turning the spotlight on, on the all Montefalco region.
This wine gets all the major awards (national and international) from all the most prestigeous wine guides of the world among which - besides the already mentioned 3 bicchieri, never missed till last edition of 2011- we mention here the score of 97 points from Wine Advocate (for vintage 2000) and the title of “BEST italian Wine” (for vintage 2001, awarded in 2005 from all the italian wine guides in a list compiled by Milano Finanza.
The complexity, the structure and the richness of this wine together with the incredible ageing potential (over 20 years) turns it into a true “cult wine” and gave the whole Montefalco area the strength for an impressive growth.
Over the years the Sagrantino 25 Anni has been linked to the biggest names in entertainment, fashion and economy: from Sharon Stone (who won a charity auction purchasing a limited edition of this Sagrantino signed by Roberto Cavalli) to Catherine Zeta Johnes and Micheal Douglas that seems to have toasted during their marriage with a glass of Sagrantino and.. Roberto Benigni that on Oscar night , celebrated his professional success with a glass of Sagrantino by Caprai.
The latest initiative related to this wine is dedicated to the italian Nobel Prize and Senator Rita Levi Montalcini, who turned 100 in 2009: on that occasion
Caprai auctioned a barrel of the prestigious wine and donated the proceeds to the Association of which the Senator is chairman ( Rita Levi Montalcini non-profit organization for the education of women in Africa).
